A year in the life of a Planning intern
Posted by emma.critchley | 01 July
Here at TLC Marketing we take pride in our internship programme. Each year we take on interns so they can complete a 12 month work placement as part of their university degree. Our interns aren’t tea makers or admin fillers. They are planners, client service executives, PR and marketing assistants; they are an integral part of the TLC team and treated just the same as any other employee. So when that internship ultimately comes to an end, we all feel like we’ve lost a member of the TLC family.
That is happening this week with Sophie Lyndon. Sophie is studying a Marketing and Communications degree at Bournemouth University and came into our Partnerships and Content team before moving over to Planning where she worked on pitch briefs, produced invaluable audience analysis and attended client meetings. We sat down with her to find out what it’s really like being an intern at TLC Marketing.
What attracted you to TLC Marketing?
I was attracted by the diverse range of brands that TLC work with and the work-hard-play-hard atmosphere they promoted in the interview.
What brands have you worked on?
I have worked with so many brands – around 51 that I’ve counted! They range from global banks, big fashion houses right through to FMCG and insurance brands. No two days are the same.
How has TLC developed or changed your career path?
The thought of working at a global marketing agency in the heart of London was pretty daunting. I honestly had no idea where I wanted to be or what I wanted to do, so this year has been a real learning curve for me. I have discovered what I enjoy and where my strengths are. It has definitely given me the drive to pursue a career in planning and strategy in the future.
What has been your highlight?
It has to be the huge amount of responsibility that I have been given and the feeling of being a valued member of the team. I’ve had the opportunity to go to countless meetings and really feel as if I am part of the business and its success.
What has been your favourite thing about the placement?
My favourite thing about the placement has definitely been working with such a fun, friendly and talented team. I truly feel that I have been able to learn from the best in the industry and have formed some great friendships along the way.
Have you had any mini fist pump moments?
Yes, loads, but my first client meeting at the start of my placement has to be what I’m most proud of. I remember how nervous I felt, but being thrown in at the deep end gave me that chance to learn and grow my confidence. If I compare myself now to how I was 12 months ago, I'm so proud of how far I have come and how much I have achieved.
What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was my confidence. I was so shy when I started, but I've now learnt how to present to clients with conviction as well as having confidence when asking questions and sharing ideas to TLC stakeholders. There is always the worry of being the most junior person in the room and sounding stupid but luckily TLC are so encouraging and welcoming of ideas that it has given me much more courage in my convictions.
If you can sum up a TLC Marketing internship in three words what would they be?
Exciting, enlightening and invaluable!
